Every business has a story that reflects its founders' personal experiences. For me, the name "Elle and Stuart" is tribute to my beloved mother, Ellen Stuart. The slight twist that led to "Elle and Stuart" may seem like a typographical error, but for me, it carries great significance and warmth.
The Inspiration Behind the Name
Naming a business creates its identity and can have a lasting impact on customers. In my case, the name honours a woman who played a vital role in shaping who I am today. Ellen Stuart was more than just a mother; she was my first sewing teacher. She encouraged my creative journey with fabric and thread. The name "Elle" was born from a simple mistake, yet it adds charm and a personal touch to our brand.
Memories of Learning to Sew
Learning to sew with my mother is a cherished memory. My first project was a blue and white gingham rug for my grey horse, Robbie. It was an ambitious attempt for someone new to sewing, and I struggled initially. I broke countless needles and frequently left my mother frustrated with my clumsiness. Yet, what I remember most is her endless patience and encouragement.
During one lesson, I spent four hours trying to assemble a simple pillowcase. I was ready to quit, but my mother assured me that every mistake was part of the learning process. Today, when I look back, that pillowcase symbolizes my growth and perseverance.

"You'll Never Be Sorry"
One phrase from my mother remains etched in my mind: "You'll never be sorry I taught you to sew." This saying encapsulates her belief in self-expression through creativity. Sewing became a treasured bonding time between us, filled with moments of laughter. I realize now that these experiences taught me resilience and offered a safe space to explore my creativity.
I struggled through school and was never academic but I did finish HSC (Year 12 back then). At the end of school years I really couldn't decide what to do next so I took 12 months off trying to find a direction. We lived on a small farm at the time and mum and I had weekly trips to Melbourne poking around in fabric shops finding bargains galore. Those 12 months were very special and I realised later how lucky I was to have mum to myself...It was somehow meant to be!
Sadly she passed away suddenly 3 years later.
Special Times and Cherished Memories
The moments spent sewing with my mother were invaluable. Each stitch held a story, and every error became a lesson rather than a failure. I can visualize our cozy sewing corner, filled with colorful threads and remnants of projects gone by. The laughter we shared, the sound of the sewing machine, and my mother’s gentle guidance are memories I will forever treasure.
Carrying Forward the Legacy
By naming our business "Elle and Stuart," I wanted to honuor my mother’s legacy and the valuable lessons she shared. Sewing goes beyond just connecting fabric; it connects people and memories. Each item we create carries a piece of my mother’s spirit.
